Most newer BIOSes support the enabling of block mode, which allows multiple hard disk sectors to be transferred on a single interrupt. This feature is controlled with this BIOS setting.
Usually block mode can be set to either 16 or 32 sectors per interrupt. If your hard disk currently has block mode disabled, you can try enabling it to see if performance improves, but you may have to turn it off again.
